Sir Richard Called Me a “Slut”…and I liked it!

Sir Richard called me a slut and I respond with deafening applause of appreciation! Sir Richard’s Condom Company’s Slut Unite campaign is not an attempt to degrade women but instead has hijacked the negative connotation the word “slut” evokes to encourage a healthy, pro-sexual attitude. A company inspired by conscientious consumerism turns naughty pirate…brilliant! There is no doubt that this is a marketing ploy working in tandem to promote their product but who says all advocacy must be selfless. Money makes the world go round and without the voice that their corporate dollars grant, we would never have heard of this inspired campaign! The beauty of the Sluts Unite campaign is that rather than bashing individuals it commandeers the stereotype that these individuals depend upon and has plagued women for centuries.

Slut-Shaming transcends political affiliation and gender and can be perpetuated by even the most unlikely sources, thus making the Sluts Unite campaign even more important for the cause of women. Slate Magazine published an article where the author argues that Liberals engage in Slut-Shaming as often as Conservatives. Now, I admit that neither side of the political aisle is populated exclusively by angles, so the topic of the article was not the source of my discontent. The articles author, Katie Roiphe, chose to serve women who pursued sexual relations with married men as ‘typical’ example of promiscuous women; perpetuating the myth that women who engage in casual sex {sex outside of relationships} are immoral and unethical. There is a spectacular difference between a woman choosing to have no-strings sex and those who choose to pursue sexual encounters with married men. Roiphe encourages the myth that promiscuous women who mimic male sexual behavior are void of self control.

The source of Slut-Shaming can surprise you but so can the sources of dignity. The dazzling irony of a condom company promoting a pro-sexual attitude for women and their right to access hormonal birth control surpasses expectations of even the most socially responsible company. The stunning audacity of a woman to unwittingly demonstrate Slut-Shaming while attempting to combat it is equally absurd. I have openly admitted, based on current cultural standards, I am a slut. Join me, a modern-day buccaneer, in vanquishing the harmful and destructive power of the word SLUT by harnessing and owning it. The Sluts Unite oath:

  • I believe that sex represents more than just the creation of children.
  • I believe that it is an enjoyable, healthy and profound part of the human experience.
  • I also believe that the responsible use of birth control is an essential component of a mature, civilized society.
  • And if these beliefs make me a slut in some people’s eyes, then so be it.
  • I will stand united with my fellow sluts, now and always.
